LAHORE (Dunya News) – Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar has been appointed as the country’s deputy prime minister.

The Cabinet Division issued a notification on Sunday, formally assigning Dar the additional charge of deputy prime minister, following Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's approval.

As per the notification, the appointment was made by PM Shehbaz “with immediate effect and until further orders”.

With this appointment, Ishaq Dar becomes Pakistan's fourth deputy prime minister. Chaudhry Pervez Elahi has previously served as the deputy prime minister of Pakistan.

Dar’s appointment coincides with PM Shehbaz’s visit to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, to attend the World Economic Forum (WEF) special meeting on Global Collaboration, Growth and Energy.

Back in March, Ishaq Dar was appointed the country’s foreign minister after the PML-N and the PPP formed a coalition government following the Feb 8 general elections.

Dar has earlier served as finance minister from 1998 to 1999, then for a period of three months, March to May, in 2008.

Dar again led the Finance Ministry from 2013 to 2017 and then from 2022 to 2023.

He has also served as the minister for industry and investment from Feb 1997 to July 1997 as well as commerce from Dec 1997 to Oct 1999.

From March 2012 to June 2013, Dar also served as the leader of opposition in the Senate.
